Introducing our 2024/25 Proficiency Tests

Genetically Modified Food Programme

Nearly 35 years after the first product trials, GM foods remain a topic of much discussion.

Some territories embrace the technology widely, some restrict the use and cultivation of GM crops and others continue to ban their use in agriculture. Where GM foods are controlled or prohibited, it is important that laboratories testing for the presence of GM are able to detect the modified material. The FapasĀ® GM proficiency testing materials provide laboratories with the means to independently demonstrate their ability to correctly analyse for the most commonly encountered GM crops, such as maize and soya.

Using a high-quality GMO food PT from FapasĀ® your laboratory can demonstrate the quality of your testing regime and protocols, helping to ensure the compliance of food intended for human consumption.

We also include animal feed in our GM scheme, which provides a valuable tool for meeting strict EU regulations on feed. The PTs cover the detection and/or quantification of genetically modified material in food samples, including soya, wheat, and maize. We also have a material for finished baked product and tobacco. The determinands include specific GM events for soya and maize but also allow results to be submitted for genetic markers p35S and tNOS as indicators of GM contamination.

Featured Genetically-Modified Food Proficiency Tests

Our GM proficiency tests are focussed on foodstuffs derived from the major GM crop types, which are intended for human or animal consumption. We offer tests for both processed and unprocessed soya, maize, and wheat products, in mixed or unmixed matrix combinations. We also provide proficiency testing for tobacco products, including detection of cauliflower mosaic virus and Agrobacterium tumefaciens to detect the presence of genetically-engineered crop plant material.
